Answers About Foot Surgery

Occasionally, foot complications cannot be solved through conservative treatment options. If this is the case, surgery may be available. Conditions in which surgery might be a treatment option include bunions, hammer toes, heel spurs, and neuromas. Procedures may also include operating on tendons, nails, metatarsals, skin and cartilage. Your doctor will perform preoperative tests to better understand the ailment. Following the operation, the doctor will most likely recommend rest, ice, compression and elevation. Make sure to speak with the medical professional to confirm your individual recovery instructions, specifically when you can put weight on the foot. Hopefully, following surgery, pain will subside and the feet and ankles can function properly. If you believe you may need foot surgery, speak with a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact Glenn Davison, DPM of Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.

What are Achilles Tendon Injuries?

The Achilles tendon is a fibrous band of tissue that links the muscles from your calf to your heel. The flexibility of the tendon is key for jumping, running, and walking. The Achilles bears a lot of stress and pressure during everyday activities, as well as during athletic and recreational play. If it becomes inflamed, swollen or irritated, it is called tendonitis. The most common risk factors for Achilles tendon injuries are starting a new sport, an increased amount or intensity of an activity, bone spurs on the heels, tight calf muscles when starting an activity, and wearing improper shoes when exercising. Common symptoms of Achilles tendon injuries include the following: pain that gets worse while being active, a stiff/sore Achilles tendon when first getting up in the morning, thickening of the tendon, and difficulty in flexing the affected foot. Some treatment options are rest, physical therapy, specific exercises to strengthen the calf muscles, and anti-inflammatory drugs for pain relief such as ibuprofen or naproxen. An Achilles tendon injury may be prevented by stretching before exercising and by wearing the correct shoes. It may be suggested to cease exercise on uneven surfaces and stop activities that cause pain. If you have an Achilles injury or if you would like to take precautions to prevent an Achilles injury, please consult with your local podiatrist.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact Glenn Davison, DPM of Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

What Is There to Know About Flat Feet

People with flat feet, also known as fallen arches, have either no arch in their foot or just one that is very low. This can cause discomfort, lead to pain elsewhere in the body, as well as be an indicator to an underlying disorder. The majority of people that will experience flat feet will not show any signs of it. Some causes of flat feet include arthritis, foot or ankle injuries, weak arches and genetic factors, as it is possible for flat feet to pass from parents to their children. There are different treatments for flat feet, such as wearing an ankle brace to reduce inflammation, using fitted insoles and orthotics, or obtaining custom-designed arch supports to relieve pressure on the arch. It is advised that people who have recently developed flat feet, have pain in the feet and ankles, or have symptoms that don’t improve with supported shoes, see a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Glenn Davison, DPM from Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

It is beneficial to maintain proper foot care which can be helpful in accomplishing daily activities. Choosing a correct shoe size is important in preventing uncomfortable foot conditions from developing. Many people find it useful to measure the feet using a Brannock device, as this will help in determining the correct shoe size. It is important to try shoes on at the end of the day, because this can help to ensure the shoes will fit properly when the feet are at their largest. Additionally, there needs to be adequate room in the tip of the shoe, so the toes can move freely. Both shoes should be tried on and walked in before purchasing them, and if the footwear is made of a soft, leather material, it may reduce the possibility of getting skin irritations. Many people find it easier to find shoes that fit well if a shoe is shaped like the foot. If you would like additional information about the importance of wearing shoes that fit properly, please consult with a podiatrist.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Glenn Davison, DPM from Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

It's Time for Beautiful Feet

You don't need an excuse to have beautiful nails. Step outside without worrying about the appearance of your feet.

Research has indicated that most babies are born with flat feet. This is typically the result of muscles, tendons, and ligaments that have not fully developed yet. When the child starts to walk, it is encouraged to walk barefoot while indoors. The toes will grasp the floor naturally, and this is beneficial in strengthening the entire foot. When walking begins, the foot should be properly measured so the correct size shoe can be determined. It is important for the soles to be flexible, in addition to confirming there is adequate room for the toes to move freely in. Some children will walk with their toes pointing inward or outward. If this pertains to your child, it is suggested to consult with a podiatrist who can properly examine your child’s feet.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Glenn Davison, DPM of Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.
